It takes literally 30 minutes to clean up the stock unit. Remove the seats, fender rails (after disconnecting the turn signals). Take off the helmet lock BEFORE you pull off the rails, or your fender will get gouged (trust me, voice of experience on that one). Cut off the p-pad loop, file or grind down the nubs left around the spotwelds. Skim coat with Bondo or JB Weld, let tack up, sand with 80 grit paper followed by 120 grit, prime, and topcoat. If you have a non-metallic paint, you can get by with rattlecan enamel primer and topcoat, with at least the primer being Rustoleum (use the auto grade). If you buy your aftermarket turn signals ahead of time, bolt them on, splice in the wires, and test them while the paint is drying. There you go, one modified fender with less than $50 USA expenditure.
